Cooking Class

One of the cultural activities that the school arranges for us was a cooking class!  We had so much fun tonight.  We not only learned about technique when cooking a classic Catalan meal, but also about etiquette, the proper amount of wine to fill a glass with, and passion about food.  We were split into two groups, but we prepared the same meals.

The kitchen was very impressive; it had an old time feel, mixed with modern aspects.  Our chef, Luise, was a great teacher.  He took the time to explain everything and why we were doing things a certain way, instead of just telling us to do it.  He explained to us that wine should be filled high enough in the glass so the drinker does not need to tilt his or her head back in order to drink it.  He also told us about all the places he has lived (an incredible number).  He was very friendly and make cooking an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Even Nibhay who hates group activities had fun and "smashed" it
Everything we made was part of a traditional Catalan meal.  I think I want to explain more about Catalonia, so be on the look for a future post about Spain vs. Catalonia.  Everything was simple to make, but delicious with bold and vibrant flavors.
Cupito de sopa de tomate al aroma de Idiazabal - tomato soup with cheese
Tortilla de patatas - eggs, potatoes and onions
Pan con tomate - bread rubbed with garlic and tomato, olive oil and salt sprinkled on top
Paella - chicken, green beans, pepper, garlic, stock and rice
Crema Catalana - egg yolks, sugar, milk, starch, lemon, cinnamon and vanilla
Everyone had a good time and we all learned quite a bit.  It was fun to do something as a group outside of classes.  Classes were long, as they always are, but Anna and I found a great Mediterranean place for lunch.  Anna says it reminds her of home (She's Armenian).  Pita pocket with lettuce, cabbage, carrots, tomato, cucumber, chicken and a special sauce.  They roast the chicken on a spit for days and shave it off with an electric knife right in front of you.  It is not pretty to eat in public because they fill the pita right to the very top, but it is so good you forget to be self-conscious ;)
